Second Hand Kayak – a Buyers Guide
Kayaks come in a variety of forms, suitable for different activities and skill levels. Some kayaks are designed solely for the purpose of riding waves in the sea, whilst others are suited to flat-water paddling or white-water riding. Once you have decided what use you want your kayak to have, you can start looking for the right one. Buying a second-hand kayak is the cheapest option and as long as you follow these buying tips, there is no reason why you can’t enter the water without drowning your wallet.
The first thing you should do is ask the seller about the history of the kayak. What has it been used for? How much use has it had? And have there been any repair jobs on the kayak? A good seller should be able to give you detailed information about the kayak’s history and if they can’t, it may suggest they did not own the kayak but are just selling it on.
Seek out any damage yourself by first turning the kayak upside down and inspecting the underside. Run you hand over the bottom surface and around the sides of the boat. Both should have smooth lines and be free from large dents, creases, cracks or punctures. All used kayaks will pick up scratches and bumps but anything that changes the shape of the boat or allows water to penetrate should be avoided.
Inspect the inside of the kayak as well. Some cracks or holes are not always visible from the outside but with a strong light you can give the inside the all clear as well. Look also at the hip and back padding if the kayak has them. These should be in good condition, and if they aren’t it’s a good indication the kayak itself hasn’t been looked after properly either.
Pay special attention to any repairs on the kayak. Like with almost all water sports equipment, good repair jobs can mean performance is hardly affected. Bad repair jobs on the other hand can completely undermine the integrity of the vessel and may make it unusable. Any repairs should inconspicuous, not change the lines of the kayak and be watertight.
Lastly, often the best way to determine the condition of a second-hand kayak is to get it in the water and try it out. We advise letting the seller demonstrate first. If the kayak is not watertight you will soon know about it when they refuse or sink. If it proves to be sea worthy then get in and give it a good paddle. Check the steering, glide and buoyancy to make sure it handles as it should, and don’t be afraid to rock the boat quite hard to gauge stability.

Singlehanded Sailing: The Experiences and Techniques of the Lone Voyagers $134.95 In 1976 International Marine published Singlehanded Sailing, an account of the experiences and techniques of the lone voyagers. It quickly became a classic in its field. Here for the first time in paperback is the long-awaited second edition. Henderson offers penetrating insights into the psychology of singlehanders, their vessels, gear, strategies, and techniques, plus vivid accounts of emergency experiences alone against the elements. The information is absorbing in its own right, but also of obvious value to a larger audience of cruising sailors who occasionally find themselves sailing singlehanded or shorthanded. Combined with a wealth of practical information is an overriding sense of the camaraderie of the sea, and Henderson’s steadying hand as a master sailor and teacher. But much has changed since 1976. The growing popularity of singlehanded racing has spawned a wealth of technological breakthroughs: voyagers can now avail themselves of reliable autopilots, much lighter and more efficient rigs, microprocessor navigation, and satellite weather forecasting. Boats are bigger, lighter, and faster–and the costs and stakes are higher. Singlehanded sailing is at the leading edge of sailing technology. These innovations are of major import for the larger audience of cruising and shorthanded sailors, and Henderson explores these connections thoroughly. A chapter on Singlehanding for Everyone, and a thoughtful and provocative conclusion, assess the contributions and possible future of singlehanding. Even more than in the first edition, Henderson achieves a remarkable combination–a practical how-to book that is also an eloquent contribution to the sailing literature. No better survey of singlehanded skills, boats, and hardware exists. –from the Foreword by John Rousmaniere What reviewers said about the first edition of Singlehanded Sailing: This is more than just the most authoritative work to date on solo sailing. Because it deals with peopl |

The Cinderella Service $45.85 This book reveals the vital contribution that RAF Coastal Command made to the Allies war effort. Although often referred to as the ”Cinderella Service” because by its nature, it did not gain the recognition it deserved and was overshadowed by Fighter and Bomber Commands and considering that it was not given priority in terms of aircraft and equipment, its wartime record was second to none. The two main roles of Coastal Command were anti-submarine work in the Atlantic and anti-shipping operations against enemy warships and merchant vessels. This work looks at every aspect of the command’’s work, equipment and aircraft and draws upon many first-hand accounts. Lengthy and comprehensive appendices cover Orders of Battle, Commanders, U boats sunk, ships sunk aircraft losses and casualties. |
